China Visa-Free Transit: Test the Whole Route Before Buying Flights
A connection through China and a holiday in China can involve different entry arrangements. The useful starting point is your passport, complete flight sequence and intended movement on land. A ten-day label alone cannot tell you whether an itinerary fits a transit policy.

Draw the journey across three places
Write the place immediately before mainland entry, the Chinese entry port, every domestic stop, and the next country or region after departure. Transit policy concerns that sequence, rather than the location where a long overseas holiday originally began. Use the exact airport names and dates from the proposed tickets. An itinerary returning directly to the same overseas point can raise a different question from one continuing onward. Do not buy an extra flight merely because a travel forum calls a route valid; submit the complete sequence to the relevant official service if its treatment is unclear.
Separate nationality, port and permitted area
Eligibility has several dimensions. The National Immigration Administration’s announcement dated 20 August 2026 expanded the countries covered by its 240-hour arrangement and described onward-ticket and designated-area conditions. That is evidence that policy changes, not a universal promise for every passport. Check the current nationality list, passport type, entry port and authorized areas as separate fields. A flight arriving at one airport does not establish permission to visit every province. Likewise, a nationality appearing in a Hainan-specific notice does not automatically resolve an itinerary elsewhere in China. Keep each rule tied to its named policy.
Make the land itinerary match the permission
Map the actual overnight locations against the authorized area before selecting hotels or domestic trains. A tempting train connection may carry you across an administrative boundary even if its destination looks nearby on a national map. Ask how the permitted stay is calculated and which exit ports are allowed rather than calculating a deadline from a blog example. Leave room to reach your departure port without treating the last permitted hour as useful sightseeing time. Flight disruption does not create an automatic extension; official assistance and the applicable procedure matter if plans change.
Keep evidence readable to the people checking it
Prepare the confirmed onward booking, accommodation addresses and a compact sequence of dates. Use the same passport details throughout. Airline boarding checks and immigration entry decisions are related but separate stages, so seek clarification before travel when either side identifies uncertainty. A saved screenshot should show the policy’s date and issuing authority, not just a headline saying visa free. Recheck after a major policy announcement or itinerary change. This article explains a method of evaluating a route; it does not determine an individual traveler’s admission or replace a visa when the relevant conditions are unmet.
Illustrative route comparison
Two travelers propose the same Beijing sightseeing days. One flies A–Beijing–A; the other flies A–Beijing–B with a confirmed onward reservation. They should not assume identical transit treatment. Both still need their passport eligibility, ports, land destinations and timing checked. The extra destination is a question to evaluate, not a guarantee of admission.

Questions that come up
Does 240 hours mean any traveler can stay ten days?
No. A duration is only one condition. Nationality, passport type, port, onward journey and permitted movement also matter. Use the current NIA material for the relevant arrangement and seek an official answer for an ambiguous route.
Should I use the visa table in an older general guide?
Treat it as historical context if its dates have passed. General living guides may remain useful for everyday services while their visa examples expire. A newer notice still needs to cover your particular passport and journey.
