A China Travel SIM: Ask About Voice, Verification and Activation
A data allowance is only part of choosing a China travel SIM. Visitors may also need an active phone number, messages for verification and a device that supports the plan. Explain those needs to the operator instead of buying only the package with the largest advertised data figure.

Describe the tasks your connection must perform
Write down whether you need map searches, ordinary calls, messages, ride bookings and account verification. These are different functions, even when one phone performs them. A data-only product should not be assumed to supply a local voice number or receive the messages a particular service requests. If a payment or booking account already uses your home number, determine how you will keep receiving its messages while another line handles data. Avoid changing account details mid-journey without understanding recovery access. The cheapest amount of data is poor value if it does not support the task that prompted the purchase.
Bring the required identity and compatible phone
The government living guide says foreigners can apply for a SIM at telecom service offices using a passport or foreign permanent resident identification. Ask the provider which products are available to your device and visit purpose. Check whether the phone is unlocked and what physical SIM or electronic activation arrangement it supports. A plan that works on a companion’s handset may not work on yours. Before authorizing payment, ask what will be activated, when the validity begins and whether setup needs a connection you currently lack. Keep the original passport available for the legitimate identity procedure.
Read the allowance in terms of location and duration
Ask whether the advertised data and calls are domestic, what fair-use limits apply and what happens after the allowance is used. Establish whether a short-term package ends automatically or creates an ongoing subscription requiring cancellation. If topping up is possible, ask for the supported method and whether the same payment instrument can be used again. Do not interpret a package name such as tourist or international as a complete explanation of coverage. Write down the activation date, customer service channel and any remaining-balance check that the provider demonstrates on the actual device.
Test useful functions before leaving the service point
After activation, turn off airport Wi-Fi and open an ordinary page or map search using the new connection. If voice and messages are part of the product, ask how to test those functions too. Establish which line is selected for mobile data if your phone holds two numbers. Then restore any settings needed to keep your home-number messages available without unexpected roaming use, following your providers’ instructions. A small functional test is more useful than merely seeing a signal icon. Keep the service receipt and plan details so later support can identify the product accurately.
Illustrative two-number setup
A traveler keeps a home SIM for bank verification and buys a China plan for domestic data and calls. At the service point the traveler confirms which line receives home-number messages, which supplies data and how the short-term plan ends. A map search with Wi-Fi disabled verifies data activation. This example does not assume every device or bank supports the arrangement.

Questions that come up
Is a data-only plan enough for all travel apps?
It may handle browsing but should not be assumed to satisfy every account’s number or message requirement. Check the services you intend to use and preserve access to the number already attached to important accounts.
Should I buy the largest data package automatically?
Compare the allowance with the tasks, duration, voice needs and renewal conditions. A smaller compatible product can be more useful than a larger one that lacks a required function or cannot be activated on your phone.
